Hi,

I'm preparing to go on a three month writing sabbatical for the summer to finish a book I've been working on. I'd like to do it in Northern South America, Central America, or Mexico, and am wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

I'd like to be in a smaller town, rather than a big city, but I don't want to have to rent a car. I'd like a place where I can rent a small house, and walk to cafes/restaurants. Some place beautiful, with natural charm and inspiration.

Any suggestions? Thanks much.

Picking just one for each area. Coroico, Bolivia. Beautiful town far enough down the mountains from La Paz to moderate the weather without the heat of the Yungas. Great views, all parts of town accessible in minutes. Several houses for rent. Photos on my web site.

Guatemala.. Antigua may or may not be too busy for you. But I'd say try it before moving on. Gore Vidal once lived there..don't know if his house is still available. Otherwise, go to Lake Atitilan. Lots of little villages. At first glance Pana seems like a one street tourist strip. But you can find nice little spots that are secluded within a couple blocks. Other towns.. San Marcos is ok except for the crystal wavers. Santa Cruz.. mellow. San Pedro.. You decide if you can put up with the drug culture. A five minute tuk tuk ride away is San Juan. Few travelers.. some incredible painters. Santiago.. historically fascinating. Several other villages to check out.

Mexico.. tons. I'd pick some larger spots. Guanajuato or Oaxaca.

Before even reading what you had to say this is the very first place that popped into my head. I couldn't think of a better place.

It definitely is quiet, and very small. You would have peace and quiet to write that is for sure.
