I'm in Uruguay doing post-grad research and need to head to Ecuador for May with a stop in Rio... instead of flying from Rio to Quito, I was thinking it would be fun to spend the month of April getting there overland.

Any reccomendations on the feasibility of going Manaus-Iquitos by river and then onward from Iquitos to other parts of Brazil? Looking for estimates of time/cost, positive and negative experiences on the boats, etc.

I've also heard some rumors that some of the Peru/Ecuador border crossings are on the sketchy side... any thoughts?

Thanks for any advice you might have!

Not sure I understand what you plan is. Brazil to Iquitos (which is in Peru) then back to Brazil?

Manaus to Iquitos takes about 7 days by boat I believe. Quite a few people do it. I've heard nothing about border crossings being dodgy.

Where does Ecuador come into this? To get to Ecuador's Amazon from either Peru, or Brazil, you'll have to go (fly) via Quito.

Why do you want to visit all these amazon regions? After a week in the jungle you'll almost certainly have had enough.

To get from Iquitos, Peru, up to Ecuador, it's a bit tricky but not impossible and not only by plane, though that's the most efficient and not too expensive. Between Iquitos and Lima, it's about 1.5 days on bus, and three days by boat, if I remember correctly. From Lima, there are tons of buses heading north to cities like Quito, Cuenca, and Guayaquil.

I wouldnt recommend Iquitos. Its to put it nicely not much to look at. granted its in the middle of nowhere and the only way in is boat or plane. there are some nice lodges a couple hours out of Iquitos by boat. Ceiba Tops has 3 or 4 of them. from (jungle Luxury) to sleeping with the snakes in a lean too.

as an earlier poster put it a week or so is enough.
if going to peru go to machu picchu. well worth it.
