I am planning on travelling to several south american countries this year but Im not sure about a few things. firstly, I will be travelling overland and not by plane, but all the visa information seems to suggest that you need an onward air ticket to get into the country. Surely you can get enter at border crossings without this ticket, just wondering how anyone else managed to do it?
Secondly most of the information that Ive seen shows that US$50 is required for everyday of your stay in several south american countries. Is this actually the case and if so how rigidly enforced is it?

Thanks!

I crossed Peru-Bolivia, Bolivia-Chile, Chile-Peru, Peru-Ecuador by land and Ecuador-Colombia by plane. Although it migh be different for Kiwis, nobody asked me for an onward ticket (including when I arrived in Peru without one - my return was from Colombia) nor to prove I had $50 a day. But, just carry a credit card and that usually fouls those who ask that question.

I pretty much did the same overland crossings as Viaggero, and was never asked for an onward ticket or for any proof of funds. I also took a one way flight from Lima to Quito with no hassles as well.

I guess you wont have problems, and no money is required, and 50 dollars per day is more than enough for S America

have a nice trip Smile

I crossed the border between Chile and Argentina multiple times in both directions on my bike and had no issues whatsoever with any minimum daily funds or return ticket issues. Nor did I have any issues while traveling by car on a later trip.

A couple of notes:

1) If you are crossing borders in a rental car, you will typically need documentation from the rental company verifying ownership, the rental agreement, etc. Be sure to get all the proper paperwork from the rental company- specifically with regards to driving a rental car from Argentina into Chile.

2) Also when crossing into Chile via land, they are pretty strict about confiscating any fruit / vegtables / ag products in general because they don't want their crops infected by nasties from your produce. So go shopping after you cross into Chile.

Cheers!
Mark
