Has anyone done the train trip from Riobamba to the Devil's nose and back to Alausi in Ecuador? How was it?

We were considering spending the night in Alausi and busing down to Cuenca the next day, BUT--is it possible to stop in Canar to tour Ingapirca and store your bags at the site?

I'd rather not go to Cuenca only to turn around and head north again...

Ideas?

Yes I've done something similar, and almost got decapitated. Did you hear about the Japanese tourists that got decapitated on this train journey in 2007? Keep your head down!

There's no storage at Ingapirca, but the ruins are very close to Cuenca anyway, and it's worth spending a couple of nights in Cuenca. Check out Las Cajas National Park if you get time.

Didn't do the train trip. Yes, it seems those camera happy japanese folks have changed the rules a bit. You can no longer ride on the roof--didn't seem worth it to me without the great rooftop views and risking the loss of my noodle.

The bus from Riobamba to Cuenca does go through Canar--they tell you you can't get off but I don't see why you couldn't. Canar doesn't seem like much of a town to hang out in though.

We took the bus from Cuenca back up to Ingapirca (Canar) (2 1/2 hours). You only get 1 1/2 hours at the site but it's plenty. Long trip but worth it if you appreciate archeology.
