Considering going to Rio for 12 days at the beginning of July. There will be two of us, both young males. Is it safe there? We would fly into Sao Paulo, so what would be the easiest/cheapest way to get to Rio and where do you recommend we stay?

Thanks!

The cheapest way to get from S.P. to Rio is by bus (about 6 hours, run frequently). You could also fly.
There are lots of options for hostels. The main tourist neighborhoods are Copacabana and Ipanema, near the beach. You could try Che Largato in Ipanema or any of the several hostels in the alley at 175 Rua Barao de Torre in Ipanema.( Try here to look for them: http://www.hostelworld.com )
As in any major city, there is crime in Rio, exacerbated by the proximity of poor neighborhoods to rich ones--so read/heed all the warnings and use your street smarts at all times.
You should take a thorough look at the site www.ipanema.com for info on neighborhoods, clubs, restaurants, beaches, eto. to orient you.
Boa viajem.
