What not to miss and where to stay in Salta.

I'll be going for about five days in mid November. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Whenever there is Dulce de Leche available, make sure that you order it, whether or not you are hungry, no matter what time of day it is. Don't let us down!

Salta is a nice city itself. Another good thing is the area around, and day trips to Cachi, Cafayate, San Antonio de los Cobres.

Oh my gosh, dulce de leche...I lived off of anything dulce de leche flavored practically every day I was in Arg!

Trips north to the Quebrada region are nice as well..beautiful colored dry high mountains...

It helps if you know Spanish there as the population is more indigenous (Quechua and some Aymara - very beautiful culture, really nice people up there when I went)..they'll speak Spanish and their native language...harder to get by that region if you don't speak spanish.

I stayed in the HI Hostel Backpackers on Calle Buenos Aires (be careful, there are two HIs and several called Backpackers). Nice because not only is breakfast included, but most nights a good dinner as well, in their bar area. Great way to meet people and have some beers and good food.

The guys there are warm and helpful, the place is clean and neat.

Also they have a pool. Say no more.

(Not sure if it is the cheapest around tho...)

Would you recommend staying in Salta and taking day trips or is it worthwhile to spend in the night in other town like Cafayate?

Recently got back from Salta (trip reports and travel tips in my signature).

A couple of days in Salta is enough. There's loads of other places to stay in addition. Cachi is peaceful and civilised. Cafayate is worth a visit if you're into your wines. North of Salta, Tilcara, Purmamarca, Humahuaca and Iruya all have their unique charms and reasons for visiting.

My personal favourite is Iruya -an amazing setting, relatively off the beaten track and some great trekking nearby,
