Hi, as there doesn't seem to be a thread about books I thought I would start one.

It doesn't have to be just about guide books. It can be recommendations for type of book: eg. fiction, history, travel writing. Anything that gives the would-be traveller an insight into a particular country.

I'll start the ball rolling:
European Rail Timetable (Thomas Cook) is something I've found indispensable for planning interrail trips in Europe.

In terms of Rough Guide vs LP I find both are pretty good on Europe, and overall I have no clear preference. Though I would particularly recommend The Rough Guide to St Petersburg.
