I’m being asked to provide my blog’s visitor stats and I need some clarification;

Page views seems pretty self-explanatory, however, ‘unique visitors’ is in question…

If I understand correctly, each time someone new visits a blog, they get tagged with a cookie. Is a ‘unique visitor’ then defined by each time a cookie is distributed?

Or is there a daily recycle or something, so if my friend Katie visits me three times a week (always from the same computer), is that three ‘unique visitors’?

I’m also told that some people’s systems refresh or some such thing, so each time they visit they get a new cookie, which may skew results.

Also, is there any way to get a more detailed breakdown? I’m talking reports for daily averages for certain time periods, etc.

Thanks! Viking

In your scenario, Katie would count for 3 unique visits. She is a unique visitor each day. She can look at as many pages as she wants, but as long as she's at the same computer she counts as one unique visitor for that day.

It is logged by IP address so if someone gets assigned a random IP address each time they log on (like dial-up) they would be considered a new unique.

Our stat program is not set up to give the type of detail you want, but if you want to sign up for a different stats program that gives more detail we can add that to your site.

Thanks for the clarification.

I'll pass on the stats program. This is (hopefully) a one time deal. I'm taking stats by hand each day for two weeks, plus figuring in educated guesses for the entire month of July. It doesn't need to be scientific, just a decent representation of my average daily/weekly/monthly traffic. Viking

I'm interested in finding out more about a different/detailed stats version.

Please advise...

Hi Snarky,

Leif used to host his personal site with us so he was able to have somewhat more customization than we can offer for member travel blogs. Unfortunately, the stats package we have for the blogs is as fancy as we get for the time being.

Is there any way of the stats being visable to everyone? At the moment I can see them when logged in but no one else can see them .
Thanks.

Yes, at the top of your stats page there is a link that says "Make stats public". Click on that and anyone visiting your blog will see the stats and link to more stats on your blog pages.
