Hi All

Currently in the process of planning a trip with our 2 children. At the moment it looks like we will be able to do this in a couple of years time but we need to budget now. For reference they will be 2.5 and 4 at the time we go. Is there an age limit for staying in hostel family rooms ? or are we at that age best off in a hotel ?

I am currently thinking we are best off sticking to Oz and NZ for the majority of the trip given the ages they are but if anyone wants to influence me there are other places then feel free.

Thanks

Clare

PS We are UK based

You do not mention how long you intend to be away which will make a difference on your choices.

Have you looked into motorhomes or long term rentals? Both are great ways ( and cheap) to travel with a child.

oops I did forget that bit ! We are not going to be away for massive amounts of time but maybe 3 or 4 months depending on money (as ever !).

Motorhome is defiantely one of the options we are considering. At the moment I am struggling to get my head around planning it and the best way to tackle it !I'll check

Thanks

You might want to look into rural Spain and Thailand as possible places too as you can live quite cheaply in both places and it could extent your trip possibly.

OZ and NZ can be more expensive. There are also some long term rentals in rural areas there that might be a possibility.

We have quite a luxurious 4 bedroom village house in one of the prettiest white villages in Spain with two big ocean and mountain view terraces for 600 euros a month (winter long stay). We could have done it much less in a smaller place for 200 or 300 euros a month, probably less in a more inland tiny village.

We have just loved it and it sure beats the winter weather in the UK ,not to mention the kids would get great exposure to another language.

Just something to think about.

I'm in NZ...LMK if I can help.
Maybe look for a caravan and cheap car on www.trademe.co.nz
Then you can freecamp....or park on our suburban driveway!

FYI, the BBH hostel system in NZ is second to none and there's no age limit for kids. All you have to do is pick up their guide which lists all hostels by town with ratings and a list of facilities. It also tells you which one's are family friendly.

In Australia, we used the Holiday Parks more extensively (like Big 4) because we could rent a little self-contained cabin for less than 4 beds in a hostel (AUS$75-100/night.

Don't feel that you have to stay in hotels - we had fabulous experiences in hostels and guesthouses all over Oz, NZ and Southeast Asia. The kids have a way of breaking down barriers.

Hope that helps!
