For the past year I have scoured the Internet looking for blogs created by families doing RTW trips or other types of extended travel. I have found them to be instructive, inspirational and very creative. They can also be hard to find.

I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread that contains links to Family Travel Blogs. An easy resource for others seeking information and inspiration (and to realize you may not be as crazy as some of your friends, neighbors and relatives may think you are!)

So, proceeding on the assumption that a family that has created a travel blog would like others to find it, a list of blogs I've found follows.

(Note: I'll let the frequent contributors here who have blogs speak for themselves Wink

Good idea! Here are some from our website:

families that have enjoyed fulltime RVing for years while homeschooling both in Europe
http://www.daisydraper.co.uk/
http://ccarautourdumonde.free.fr/
 and in the Americas
http://www.activated-storytellers.com/gozas.html ,
http://www.road-school.com/
http://www.hopalog.com/
http://www.barenakedfamily.com/homie.htm
http://fuhkauifamily.blogspot.com/
( can't list them all here)
and world travelers
http://www.janeandken.com/
http://www.slowtrav.com/blog/kaydee/
http://www.brightkidsathome.com/nucleus/index.php
http://www.rfleming.net/
http://www.mytripjournal.com/tanenbaum
http://www.atwtravel.net/

I liked pulling info from lots of different sources and I learned from all of them. I learned from backpackers ( with and without kids) as well as people who stayed in one spot for a year and travel in that way, American full time RVers and even people who have long been "perpetual travelers":

http://www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Shores/5315/
and http://www.retireearlylifestyle.com

I have been keeping blogs for a while and will have to go thru my links on various computers to add more. I did not separate them out by family or not. Some of the best advice came from people who do not have kids because I think they have more time to get up more information. LOL! Still the family blogs are always fun and it will be nice to have a collection in one place. I will get back to this.

Hi bbtz,

Thanks for mentioning Family Travel: See The World With Your Kids my blog and thanks to everyone for this thread.

I'll link to the thread in my next Monday linkpost, since I think a lot of my readers would like to see RTW/general vagabonding blogs related to families.

BBTZ,

Congrats on going live with you site! It's a bit like opening night.

Your site looks great, and expresses your family's sense of creativity. I'll be exploring your site in the days ahead (and adding you to our blogroll!).

Best,

thanks guys!
i can take absolutely ZERO credit for the site (except for posing for pix and the occasional spelling correction)
it is the sole doing of my machead husband. he will teach me how to make entries and hopefully i will able to contribute some thoughts on our process in that forum. it is fun, and so many of our friends who did not know, now do. yeah, we're a funky crew....but we like it that way Wink
you guys inspire us as we learn a lot from your writings, musings, etc. so, hopefully another traveler or family of travelers can look at our site and say, "Geesh, if they can do it, I can do it."
many thanks.

peace,
b

You guys are smart with lots of time ahead to tweak and get use to the process. We were so busy with the prep that we did not get ours up until days before take off.

One of the smartest things we did was bring home movies and copies of photo albums with us. ( We brought some real ones too). This is particularly important if you are going to be longer than a year. I have lived abroad before for a year, so had some ideas on the topic. Although I must admit it it MUCH easier as a family, so we have not had any homesickness thus far.

We had already packed everything away when I realized we would want some of that with us. So my husband had to drive 4 hours out of town to our storage place ( MUCH cheaper there and near relatives) where we have a tiny space for our things. Schlep them all back and scan everything, get copies made etc etc. THAT certainly was one delay in getting the website up. LOL!

My child is young, so this is especially important and we have fun things like family reunions and weddings on there so she gets to see the whole extended family even as we roam, as well as friends from home, pets, our xmas rituals, her as a baby & toddler etc etc. It even keeps her connected to some of our relatives like her Grandma & my brother and uncles who have passed on as they are alive & well on screen. One of her favorite things is to have a family home movie night from time to time in our RV as we roam, sometimes even with organic popcorn. Wink

Sometimes internet connection is not available even in Europe and cyber cafes can be a real pain ( read also about protecting yourself while in them), but blogs, skype and webcams make RTW-while- connected-travel MUCH easier these days.

Wow - I had no idea there were so many family travel web sites now. We could not find any before we left.

There are a bunch of the older sites listed here:

I just found two more:

http://travelingwithelliot.blogspot.com/

http://www.deliciousbaby.com/

They are not RTW blogs, but the second one is particularly good for families traveling with very young children.

We came back from our one year RTW trip in August (WT & I went through the planning stages together). Just thought I'd slip in our blog as well (although it's still not finished as I had technical difficulties in Europe and never recovered).

Career Break Central

Here's a link to another Mom who lived vicariously through us while we were travelling and has just embarked on her own adventure with her three kids:

It's the journey we seek... destinations are extra

To those of you who are in the dreaming/planning stages, it's totally worth it and is an experience you and your kids will never forget. To those of you who are on the road, I'm jealous, a part of me will never lose the wanderlust.

Happy Trails!

Carpe diem!
