(I am copy/pasting this from another post as I don't want this list lost as I am hoping some will want to add to it as time goes on.Actually ,gogirl mention some great books that are based in Ireland too ( the "Bantry Bay Series" of books by Hilda VanStockum) that can be added too
Well I was not thinking about just one age.Several of us have been talking on various threads ( and hoping someday their will be a forum just for families traveling and RWT ing with kids!!...pretty please and I thought it would be a good thing to have running so we could share and exchange.Several of us are leaving in the fall for RWT with kids,so this period of time is a good time to read things about the trip and the areas we will be in ( ie my child has recently read a childs version of Don Quixote and several references to it and now will appreciate the windmills in nothern Spain to a greater degree when she sees it.) Many of us homeschool ,so want to make the most of the travel.I love to enrich myself with flavors and stories before visiting an area ,so passing that kind of passion on to her so we can enjoy the experience in greater depth. So we read at lots of different levels ie we have a picture book of Don Quixote( my child is still very visual and enjoys sophisticated picture books) ,a kids chapter book abridged version and will read some of the original adult classic in Spanish ( my dh & dd are bilingual). So I am real open to lots of different levels from preschool to adult. My child is in a French/playwriting/acting class combo class for 6-10 year olds at the moment thats based on the Madeline books,so even tho she is far beyond them in reading ability, all the pictures of real places will help spark an interest when we see them this fall in Paris.( We are starting our RWT in Paris ( actually picking up Camper in AMS) and doing some France and heavily Iberia ( Morrocco too) thoroughly the first 6 months. We will also be doing Italy,Greece,Turkey and Egypt in the spring,so more focused on those areas and histories right now as well as basic exciting RWT stories.I hope thats more clear I kind of confused this thread ( put it in a wrong place and someone moved it for me)and another one.So perhaps I should repost the titles that I quickly gathered. Its sort of a continuation of a thread we have going on about our RWT with kids, but thought it needed its own just to do with books for kids as they are hard to "scout" out specific for this topic.I will put things more clearly on my blog/website when I get it up ,but thought these might help some that are planning now.My particular child is just 5 ,but taught herself to read at 2 and was reading Harry Potter at 4( and is currently accelerated 3 years ahead in school in 2nd grade),so is kind of several ages at once and her asynchronicity issues are a big reason for our deciding to take this extended travel now and homeschool as we go.Some things we read out loud together as a family, some are for share reading and some are for silent reading. Heres a few I have found that we are enjoying...feel free to add anything that you have enjoyed and learned from: Story of the world books http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0971412944/ref=pd_ys_i...F8&v=glance&n=283155 Babar's world tour My tour of Europe by Teddy Roosevelt earthsearch ( a kids geography museum in a book) Shadow of a bull picturebook dictionary childs gift of art series ( small) Leonardo & the flying boy Degas and the little dancer picasso and the girl with the ponytail Camille and the sunflower ( van gogh) It can't be done Nellie Bly a reporters race around the world The great world tour Melanie martin books Around the world with phineaus frog Horrible history series Story of Ferninand Haliburton books like "The flying carpet" ( True adventure stories from a world traveler in the 20's).We have a bunch and will take some with us Charlotte in Paris Linnea in Monets garden getting to know spain and spanish Eloise in paris Tales from the odysesy( osborne) Favorite midievel tales ( osborne) Prince of the birds ( Spain) don Quixote ( kids classic version) count your way thru Japan,Africa,France,Greece,Italy etc http://www.soultravelers3.com “I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” PABLO PICASSO |
