We're going to be San Francisco soon. Can anyone recommend a good family accomodation? Is the Adelaide hostel good with a 2 yr old?
Happy Thanksgiving everyone

What is your budget? Does it have to be a hostel? What area of town do you want? What are your must haves?

I don't know much about the hostel other than its location, but can help you with other accommodations.

Hi, no it doesn't have to be a hostel at all. We'd like to keep the price to under $130 including the pking. Since we will have a car and also are good with getting around on public transportation the exact location is not that important except we would like it to be somewhere where we can walk to get a nice dinner safely and easily with a 2 yr old.
Budget/kid friendly will be our main factors but we tend to like places with a little character and that have their own place to hang out in the evening. We have found if the place is small enough we can even take the baby monitor with us and get a drink after our daughter goes to bed. That would be great but not a must.
thanks so much!

You may want to try Hotel Tomo. This is a little off the regular beaten path, in Japantown, but easily accessible by public transportation. http://www.jdvhotels.com/tomo/ It is a block off of Fillmore Street, which is great, and about 7 blocks from one of my favorite parks in the city, Alta Plaza (there is a FANTASTIC view, and a great playground for the kiddy). The hotel definitely has personality, and there is a bar right downstairs with, from what I have heard, a good restaurant. I just ran rates for next weekend, and came up with 109$/night.

The Joie de Vivre family has a lot of cute, moderately priced rooms. (Tomo is one of their properties...the Kabuki, which is a block away, is also one).

And, sometime coming up there's a Japanese/Hawaiian craft fair in Japantown, which may be worth a look. We don't get a ton of tourists in this hood, but it is worth checking out (Japantown is in Lower Pacific Heights, smack dab in the middle of the city, about 1 mile from Union Square).

Thanks for that link! What a cool little chain of hotels with a lot of extra perks. We thought Hotel Tomo would be perfect for us with Violet but they can't park our van. We're driving a conversion van so we can just pull over and camp along the coast. so I think we're going to stay at Hotel Kabuki. I found a deal that keeps us in budget. We were also looking at Hotel Phoenix which looked really great but in the Tenderloin. Not having been there i wasn't sure how practical it would be with a 2yr old.
Happy Thanksgiving!

The Phoenix is very cool, the area, especially with a child, not so much. The bar there is cool, very loud and trendy.

The newly named Hotel Kabuki (just around the block from Tomo) is supposed to be really nice. I wouldn't be surprised if the Tomo could help you park your car at Kabuki if you asked? But, from what I understand, you can't go wrong with Kabuki. And, they have a brand new bar/restaurant, tooSmile

Have fun in our lovely city!

HI
We just got back a couple of days ago and had a great trip!I always love San Francisco.
Hotel Kabuki ended up calling me with different pking info then they had originally told us so after a little more investigation we decided to try Hotel Phoenix and we were so happy we did. It was a such a cool place and the staff was great. They recommended great places to eat that were close, cool but still fun with kids. They even bought our daughter christmas presents.
The neighborhood did have some colorful characters but we weren't out that late with a 2yr old and the courtyard area was nice to hang out at and the hotel is so small that the baby monitor was in easy range of that and the bar lounge/resturant. It was only open one night we were there so we were never bothered by noise. The price was great without the free parking but that made it a huge bargain.
We checked out Hotel tomo one day when we were in Japantown and thought it looked really cool too.
Thanks so much for the recommendation and turning us on to the joie de Vivre hotels. I'm sure we'll use them again.
We stayed at the Point Montara lighthouse hostel one night. I love hostels and this one was right on the cliffs and there were several kids for our daughter to play with us but the private room seemed high. We stayed in a couple of hotels for around the same price that were good sized rooms, fireplaces, and inc. breakfast. So unless you want to stay right on the water or have the hostel experience, budget wise it seemed like we could find better deals at hotels. We found a lot of great deals on travelzoo which I use a lot.
The whole rt from LA up Hwy one to San Francisco and Napa was a great family adventure that I would really recommend. And on New Years we went to the First Night Festival in Monterey which was also a good way to celebrate New Years with kids. Something for all ages.
