My husband, daughter (who will be 1) and I are leaving Australia in March 09 for several months of travel around the world.

Currently we are tossing up the idea of travelling on the Trans Siberian Railway from Beijing to Moscow.

When I went into the travel agent to ask a few questions today they were met with abject horror at the idea Darth Mavis

Has anyone here had experience of taking their child on the railway. In addition has anyone travelled to Russia with their child/ren and have experiences to share.

I am aware that all families and children are unique and therefore experiences will differ however I am just curious at to whether other well travelled parents also consider us to be foolish for contemplating such a journey

cheers

There are loads of Russians who take their children (of all ages) on the train, so I don't see why it should be a problem for you. Did you ask the travel agent why they tought it was a bad idea?

There are plenty of people who express abject horror of going anywhere out of their ordinary with children (this includes plenty of parents). As seraphim says, there are plenty of people who do it and of course, you know yourselves and your child better than anyone else. The great thing about kids is they are universal; similar all the world round, they cry when hungry, tired, etc; they are adorable when they laugh.

Sounds like a great adventure, enjoy!

My brother did the journey as an adult and found it to be really really long (obvious I know). Maybe the travel agent was worried that you'd all go a bit stir crazy that's all. Although I much prefer trains to planes, I find a four hour train journey long enough with my kids - they are great at first, but start wanting to walk up and down endlessly after a while. If you don't mind doing that for hours at a time then go for it!
