Hello All,
I wanted to get some input on this topic. My girlfriend and I are planning a RTW trip and want to include climbing this mountain as part of it. She has astma, I was wondering if this is still possible with her astma? Has anyone done it with astma? Thanks guys

Some research on the web...also make sure you get a Doctors advice. Each person is different...more than anything the person who has the asthma knows their limits more than anybody.

I climbed Kinabalu (4095m) with Asthma and was fine, other non asthma sufferers never made it. Of course Kili is a lot higher but I think there is no rules when it comes to altitude.

It's certainly possible, but depends on the individual and the severity of the asthma. Also, is it full-blown chronic ashtma, or exercise induced?

The important thing will be to keep the pipes working and the oxygen flowing. I sometimes take a Bronchaid tablet to help open up the airways, but bronchaid is also a stimulant and may increase the heart rate as well. If she uses an inhaler now, she could probably use that on the mountain. I would have her consult with her physician. Ask about Diamox to, as it will help keep your oxygen levels up. Of course, you probably wouldn't want to do both (bronchaid/inhaler and diamox) until you've researched all the possible side effects. Again, talk to your doctor.

I suffered from asthma as a kid, and have slight exercise induced asthma now. I'm climbing Kili in a week and will let you know how it goes.

Tim

Tim - I am climbing in October and will be tested for exercise induced asthma in August - I've never had asthma, but when I do extreme cardio workouts, I have a real hard time breathing. A friend of mine had the same problem and was diagnosed with E.I.A. - so, I am very interested to find out how your trek goes - let me know!
