we are planning a trip to climb kilimanjaro in july. checking out flights on cheaptickets.com, it looks like it is almost $2000.00 usd cheaper to fly into nairobi instead of JRO. does it really cost that much to get from NBO to kili? are there other ways to do it? is it cheaper if we book the ticket once we are over there? any help would be appreciated.

thanks!

The difference to fly into Kilimanjaro and Nairobi is only about $300 to $400 - not $2000. A typical flight to Kilimanjaro cost between $1700 and $2100. Flight to Nairobi are about $1500.

we flew with qatar airways, they had the best deal to go to Nairobi. They also provide: qatar visa, dinner, hotel and breakfast if you have an overnight transfer.
Definitely worth checking out.

I flew in and out of Nairobi and it actually worked out very well for me. I spent 1 day in Nairobi and went to the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, which ended up being one of the highlights of my whole trip. Then I took the bus (cheap) to Moshi. If I remember correctly it is 4-5 hours. But since it was my 2nd day in Africa, everything we passed was fascinating so it went pretty fast. After the kili climb/safari I ended up in Zanzibar and was able to get a cheap flight straight from there back to Nairobi instead of hassling with getting back to a Tanzania airport to catch a flight that would probably connect in Nairobi anyway.

I use Kayak.com religiously for flights. I am flying from LAX to either NBO or JRO, haven't decided which yet, in Jan 09 and my flight looks to be either $1400 to NBO or $1550 to JRO using Kayak. Good luck finding a flight!

I also flew to Nairobi and went overland. If I go again, I'll fly straight to Kili and pay the extra bit. It was cool to go overland on the way to: but on the way back I was just plain tired. Smile

BTW - you'll can search kayak, and all the other flights from this page - just look at the left hand column - and our little flight widget will get you started.
