I have organized my gear what must be 100 times already and i am sure i will do it 100 more before I take off. Crossing my fingers on good weather not onlyt here, but in the states (last thing I want is to get stuck in an airport somewhere) |

I made the summit!!!
Watched the sun rise at Gillman's point at about 6:20 on 1-4-08. It was an unbelieveable trip. I took the Marangu route, I would love to do it again and head up Rongai. Mellow climb until the last night. It was very cold (had pre frostbite in 4 fingers) and had mild altitude sickness at the top. All in all I had a blast and would definitely do it again. Went with Zara. Our guide Joseph "photo" was an amazing man. It was his 95th summit climb. All his porters were great and loved getting to know each and every one of them. 13-of the 15 in our group made it to Uhuru. Only thing that was bad was that I flew into Nairobi on the night of the elections. We were hassled by police 10 minutes after leaving the airport (2 drunken policemen with AK-47s in hand dragged out our cabbie and took his money). I feel so bad for the people of Kenya. I fell in love with the people of Kenya and Tanzania. You can not find a better group of people anywhere and my thoughts and prayers are with them all. Be careful to anyone that plans on heading there soon... Trip of a lifetime. Best thing I have ever done and the lessons learned will stay with me forever... |

Oh, I did make it to Uhuru peak about an hour after sunrise. Last last hour hike to the true summit was tough. It was a crazy scene. Saw people passing out, throwing up, sometimes a combo of the two. people were dropping like flies. I never slept better then when I got back to Kibo for that hour sleep before lunch was served. When I woke I thought I woke up toa bad dream. I wanted to be down in Horombo SO bad............
Best thing was being able to tell people "OOD LUCK!" on the way down.... |
