Has anyone ever climbed or is prepping to climb Aconcagua? Any advice on training tips, trekking companies, etc? Would love to get some info. Looking to climb either '09 or '10 season...

I've thought about it a few times but always chicken out. I still get email from a company called Aventuras Patagonicas, I guess I contacted them about it at sometime.
A friend of mine did it a few years ago, I can ask who he went with, etc. You can usually find good climbing information and contacts at www.summitpost.org |

I have sent out a few "feelers" with various companies. I really want to do it. Just looking for some reputable companies to pursue instead of just flipping a coin...
What climbing has your friend done in the past? I live in the NW and am looking to get some ice climbing exp. by going after Hood, Adams, and Rainer over the next 2 years. Thanks for the link though, it is great (esp. for local climbs!!) |

I have two recommendations for Aconcagua outfitters. www.mountainguides.com www.tusker.com
I climbed Kilimanjaro with Tusker and did the Mt.Adams (Washington) Climbing School with IMG (International Mountain Guides). I will climb Mt. Rainier this August with IMG. Both are professional, quality outfitters. Both guide Kilimanjaro and Aconcagua plus many other adventures & mountains around the world. I was very lucky, the two IMG guides that do Aconcagua & other mountains, Mike Hamill & Justin Merle wound up guiding the Adams Climbing School I participated in. Both had been on Mt Everest that year...boy, could they tell great stories in the mess tent! Mike Hamill lead my rope up the Adams Glacier, what an awesome thrill. There is plenty of information on both websites. Happy climbing |

Thanks for the info, I will definitely look them up.
You took a guide up Adams? What time of year did you climb? I live in Portland OR. I am going to climb Hood in a few weeks and am going for Adams in June. Did not think a guide was all the nessecary for that summit push... Thanks though!! |

I don't think you need a guide for Aconcagua, especially if you are going for normal route. You won't be alone on the mountain since it's very crowded all the way to high camp. I'm going solo for the polish glacier in dec/jan right now since I can't find any partner for it. Good luck!
