I didn't try that. However, if I had wanted to make use of that, I would've had to attach the charger to the outside of my pack for the first couple of hours of the day's walking.

The clouds rolled in by 11am most mornings and didn't let up until late afternoon. I don't know how much sunlight the chargers need, but you may be luckless if you're not careful.

My advice is still to take extra batteries (I took 2 lithium batteries for my digital camera and mobile phone), charge them all up to full before you leave your hotel in Arusha/Moshi and keep the spares warm until you need them.

I only had to replace mine for summit night and was fine.

I purchased a charger from Noma that came with every adaptor imaginable for cell phones, cameras etc. It had a battery pack inside-you plugged it into a receptacle to charge. It is good for 4 charges before it needs to be charged again. I didn't end up needing it on the mountain, my camera is "guaranteed" to take 300 pics before being recharged-but I did use it on safari where there was no power, and it was quick and worked well. It also wasn't very expensive-about $20-much cheaper than a solar one I looked at!

If you have an SLR camera, make sure you turn off the LCD display or disable the photo preview. You'll save a lot of battery power that way.
