I am taking the MARANGU route. I have heard both good and bad things about this route. the worst being that guides that generally go up on this route are ill prepared and over hype their own exp. is this the case? Not only that, but this route also has the poor reputation of most fatalities and lowest success rate. We are going up with Kilimanjaro Trekkers Team.
I do not know if other trekking teams purposely knock this route so as to bring more business to the routes they operate on or not. For those that have been, has anyone gone up this route? It is the one with the huts at each camp. Sorry, I know i have been posting on here mad these past few days. But nearing the trip and trying to aquire as much information as i possibly can. |

We went up the Machame route in 7 days. We might go back and do the Marangu route because my hiking buddy didn’t make it to the summit. He wants to do the “hut route” as he calls it. My concern, even with the 6 day option, is there isn’t a good acclimatization program built into that route. With the Machame route you get a lot of up and down while you traverse from Shira to Barranco to Karanga to Barafu. That really helps with acclimatization I think (the old climb high, sleep low). If we do go back to do the Marangu route we would first do a climb of Mt. Meru just before as an acclimatization hike.
BTW, Does “Kilimanjaro Trekkers Team” have a web site? I can not find it... |

Shira, and it was brilliant! First 2 days you hardly see any other groups so you get a real sense of wilderness.
Start seeing people after that. The acclimatisation walks (Lent Hills and Arrow Glacier Camp) are great fun and good preparation too. 8 days is a long time though, and some find it a bit much. Mission Kilimanjaro: October 2007 |
