Just been watching the News - apparently the bird flu strain in Turkey is the H5N1 strain which has been known to infect humans.

The area involved in around Kiziska in the north west of the country.

There is another outbreak of bird flu in Tulcea in Eastern Romania - but the strain hasn't been identified yet.

Am not trying to panic anybody - rather to reassure you.

A massive initiative has been launched across Europe to identify, report, collect and test any sick birds. There are controls in place to limit the transport of birds around the continent and EU medical teams ready to fly into infected areas in the event of an outbreak.

Just be sensible, lay off the birds and you should be fine, but "if you do feel a bit fluey then take it easy and seek medical attention if symptoms persist for more than a few days". [ that's the best advice I could get from NHS-direct ]

At the moment there are isolated outbreaks. The EU has experience managing this kind of infection; having had to deal with BSE and foot & mouth disease in recent years.
