Hola , does anyone knows about an online insurance company? I ask, because all the post I´ve read mention US or Uk insurance companies. Isn´t there a world wide online supreme... insurance company????

All the better ones if not all full stop will be online in this day and age Simon, and they'll all have coverage groups to select from for where you're going.
The normal arrangement in the case of something disastrous is that transport back to your country of permanent residence is covered, and that is something you should check with the various companys no matter where they are based. Nomads has been mentioned as a good one but whalewatcher has also had a bad experience with them re stolen gear coverage, so read fine print. Columbus, I think it is , is also another well regarded company as is STA. So, it comes down really to making sure you get the coverage you want, they all being similar anyway, and not so much which country they are based in. |

One thing that I observed when researching World Nomads is that they are global, but they are underwritten by companies in various countries depending on the region, therefore the insurance isn't exactly the same. I read through the Australian contract, and then read the US/Canada one (I wasn't happy about my insurance being underwritten by an American co, simply because I'm familiar with Canadian laws, and sometimes questioned how something might be interpreted - also the fact that it said 'governed by the laws of the state of Mass.' (not gonna try to spell that, sorry
As gonorth said, it's in the fine print. The American one was not very clearly worded in places, I am led to believe there was a section missing (the list of contents didn't match the contents itself!), and some things appeared a little dubious. The Australian one was more clearly worded, more straightforward, left me questioning less. SO - no matter if you go with Nomads, or STA or whomever, be sure to read the whole thing, as best you can (not everyone is into legal lingo), be sure that it suits your needs. We decided to go with TravelCuts, even though it didn't cover the more adventurous things we might get into, because it was cheaper, quite clear, and provided everything we needed (aside from the more adventurous stuff, which we probably won't be doing too much of anyway). Before buying baggage replacement insurance, look at the deductible (how much you have to pay before the insurance covers the rest), how valuable your stuff is, and what is excluded (for example, my rather expensive eyeglasses are not covered, nor is my ipod, the only 2 things I would care to have insured). In many cases it would be cheaper to avoid that part of the insurance, and if anything happens, pay it out of pocket. sorry if I've rambled. (did I even address the question??) |

Thanks a lot, I see that I have to do a lot of research before taking any insurance! I would like it to cover my camera and electronic stuff as well, so... always read the fine print.
thanks |

Simon:
Try hunting around on this page - though this is mostly related to medical insurance. In general, I think you're going to be hard-pressed to find a travel insurance that will cover things like your camera or iPod while you're out and about. For that kind of coverage, check with your homeowners' or renters' insurance policy to see what coverage they might offer for your stuff when you're not at home. Ciao, Jessie |

As you might guess, Worldnomads isn't my favourite company. My current problem is that although I'm based in the UK, I'm forced to deal with their office in Australia--by snail-mail.
On-line access is convenient but doesn't mean squad when it comes to submitting documentation for a claim and having to deal with the complaints procedure. Find yourself a LOCAL company, preferably one with a contact phone number in a convenient time-zone and a named person whom you can talk to. |
