If I am honest I am a bit of a porker. Too much beer and too many liquid lunches....so I need to run. I try to run 2 -4 miles 3 times a week. Over the years I have run on beaches, up mountains, in cities and even around temples trying to keep fit. What I really want to know is where are the best places in the world for runners?

I used to be a lifeguard on a beach in southern delaware. We used to run on the soft dry sand at the top of the beach. Its rather grueling, but its a fantastic workout, and when you then go and run on any hard surface with shoes on, you feel like you're absolutely flying.

if you want to go to the US, boulder, colorado, is a terrific place to run. i used to run and live there.

also, if you want to race or run with people, many major cities have running clubs.

if you're ever in new york or brooklyn, we've got some great parks and happy runners!

Since you mentioned fat-burning and fitness, in my opinion, the best places are where there's a big-ass set of stairs. I follow the principle that 15-20 minutes of fairly intense exercise keeps your metabolism kicked up in higher gear all day long, slightly better than longer moderate exercise.
I've run up huge ones on the cliffs at Santa Monica Beach in L.A. Up to the castle in Coburg, Bavaria, and up through the parkland in Scarborough here in Perth.
You'll be amazed if you stick with it, how much your cardio improves and if you eat right, how much weight you can drop.
Plus you'll get legs of steel. But don't do it every day. I'd say two on, one off with swimming, sports or cycling. It'll give your knees a rest.
