Hi,

I've been researching the use of Neem as a mosquito repellant before my trip to Cambodia. Has anyone had any experience using it in lotions or sprays? Does anyone recommend any particular brand or type of Neem repellant? I'll probably also be taking doxycycline, and covering myself with Deet but I figure a little Neem wouldn't hurt either. Thanks.

I have no experience with Neem.

I do have some experience with SE Asia though, and I do not use doxycycline when I am here. No, not even in Cambodia or Laos (or where I just was- up at Mae Hong Son).

I do carry a can of Off! or Cutters; I believe in Deet. (In a pump spray bottle or aerosol can)

Your mileage may vary.

I apply neem oil (in pure form it is available in India). It does deter mosquitos from biting. Also if there are neem leaves burning in a bonfire, it keeps all insects at bay. Margo soap is also available in India, which is neem based, but for preventing mosquito bites, you have to rub yourself with neem oil very liberally (it tastes very bitter by the way). It can also be used as an antiseptic.

DIY recipe for the ugliest, stickiest but most effective insect repellent:

1/2 Olive Oil
1/4 Eucalyptus Oil
1/4 Dettol

Doesn't smell too bad either!

Also, I hear good things about Lemongrass soap - though I have yet to give it a whirl.

I met an Aussie just about a month ago who had this really good stuff called humorously enough "Bugger Off". If worked great for her and I was coveting it the whole time.
