Holds PhD in Packing
Posted
most u.s. health insurances have a ridiculous policy that if you ever have a lapse in health insurance, a period of time when you have no coverage at all, that when you do get coverage again, they won't cover many things for the first year b/c they consider these things "pre-existing conditions." so i'm wondering if i go abroad for a couple months and get traveler's insurance that covers me the whole time and there and for a few days after i get back and get a policy set-up again for the u.s., will this count as still having coverage the whole time? or do they see traveler's insurance as being a "lapse" in coverage. if anyone's had any experience with this, i'd love some feedback. thanks.

Most insurance companies see traveller's insurance as a lapse in coverage, but if you're a relatively healthy person then when you return you should be able to get independant coverage pretty easily, despite the lapse.

Try Blue Cross/Blue Shield. They offerred me coverage after a 7-month lapse, but I didn't need it cause I finally got a job!

If you're getting insurance through work, for the most part, they really can't deny you so lapse or no lapse, you're in.
