What is the difference? I know that travel insurance covers other incidentals such as lost gear and missed flights, but if I already have health insurance is the travel insurance even worth getting? The main reason I would want travel insurance is in case something horrible happens to me, but I dont see the point to double insuring myself. Is it necessary?

"Travel insurance" can mean lots of things. There are policies that only cover trip interruption, ones that add lost baggage and ones that also include medical services including repatriation to your home country. Generally, ones medical coverage (like from work) only covers you for medical care in your own country. In some cases you would only be covered if you see doctors who are listed on your own health plan. You probably won't find any doctors on your own plan in, say, Phnom Pehn. Unless you have an amazing health plan already that covers you everywhere in the world (with an easy claim policy so you can get the claims on the road), getting travel medical insurance is worth looking into.

I have the same question... My health insurance is pretty great (the ONLY perk of a government job) and I called them to ask them about travel insurance. They don't offer it but they said they will cover emergency room visits and urgent care when I am traveling, but it will be in the form of a reimbursement.

I'm leaning toward skipping travel insurance. Is that a bad idea? (I will be gone for only 2 months.)

Please someone correct me if I am wrong, but don't most credit cards provide some sort of travel insurance as part of their card benefits?
