I am going on a round the world trip. I am thinking about getting some travel insurance but am not sure if it is worth it or necessary. Anyone else have a recommendation?

Be sure to check with your present insurance company. I was shocked to discover that mine pays for everything as normal, even when I'm overseas.

I agree both with Nick and Cheesepuppet. If you have insurance already, be sure to check with them: you might have more coverage than you think, or they might also be able offer you something. ANd it is a good idea; I mean, yes, there's a really good chance that you won't need it - but if you do, and don't have it, you're screwed; it's more that you're getting some extra peace of mind.
HOw long is your trip? A really really long RTW is harder to find insurance for, but I'm sure you can swing something. There's a company that BootsnAll also partners with, Unicard, who offers some well-priced insurance packages; their max length of coverage per year is 90 consecutive days, but, still, you never know, you might be able to wrangle something! Here's a link: http://toolkit.BootsnAll.com/insurance.shtml By the way, please drop me an email or post on here what you turn up - especially if you find some cool companies/services out there. If you let me know atant@bootsnall.com, I can add that company to our insurance resources, so that way other travelers will be able to find something more easily. Hope it all works out, mate |

I work for a travel insurance company and I can tell you, I wouldn't travel without it. I've heard stories of people getting hit in the head with a coconut, getting bitten by strange bugs, getting the bends after diving to falling off the deck of a cruise ship and dying, just to name a few. An evacuation can cost upwards of 30k. There are tons of options out there. Whether you want coverage for cancellation, medical, baggage etc. Look over the certificate of insurance to see exactly what is covered and what's not. Insurance is a whole new language and it's easy to buy something and not understand it. Do some research on the web because the costs can vary greatly from company to company. It is also cheaper to buy secondary coverage then primary, but find out if the secondary becomes your primary if your primary denies your claim. If you have any specific questions I'd be happy to help, you can email me at lokilu66@yahoo.com.
