I came along a very good post about a topic that is the center of a lot of "myths" but not a lot of research. I am sure most people are familiar with the plastic/carbonate bottles that most everybody I know uses to carry water. I, along with a lot of others, have heard that there could be some chemicals (Bisphenol A specifically)that can taint the water stored in these containers. There has been some increasing concerns about the effects of these chemicals on the body.

I don't want to spoil a great post, but the article addresses the current research being done and latest advice on the use of these bottles. The author, Rick Curtis, also looks at the NY Times article (Dec. 8, 2007) that discusses a large outdoor retailer that is voluntarily removing all carbonate bottles, pending more research.

Here's the link: http://www.outdoored.com/anm/templates/template1.aspx?a=3377&z=4

I found it pretty interesting!

Update.

The Canadian Health service is now considering banning the sale of all Nalgene type containers in Canada, because of the possibility of endocrine damaging effects if a chemical leaks out in sufficient quantities.

The USA is now banning them for baby bottles as well. Turns out the plastic had almost captured the market. The only remaining large use is the coatings on baby formula cans, which apparently are also coated in the poly carbonate.

That isn't being banned, since liquids don't touch the surface and they don't, yet, have a replacement for it. They can always go back to other plastics or glass for baby bottles. Hey, glass... how about that!!! Do you think that new technology might work?
