Holds PhD in Packing

Looking for some advice here regarding medical insurance. I was originally planning on getting travel insurance that included medical and not continuing my coverage in the states. But then my mom freaked out about me not having U.S. coverage. It made some sense to me-if i get hurt/injured on the road and need to come home for continued treatment, travel medical won't cover me once i'm home and no U.S. insurance will pick up my pre-existing condition (as far as i know). So i was going to forgo travel insurance altogether (not worried much about trip cancellation, etc as i feel insurance is more for catastrophic events you can't afford) and just continue my U.S. medical coverage. But i just found out today that COBRA is going to cost me $372 a month. And that is money that i'd much rather be spending on my trip! I know i need medical coverage of some sort, and i don't want to skimp, cuz i know it's important. What do you guys do? Do most of you have coverage at home still? And has anyone had any experience in trying to get coverage after they've had a problem on the road? I'd very much appreciate some input/guidance on this matter.

Sue

My wife and I looked into this and decided to keep our blue shield plan. It covers us abroad, for the same price we pay at home about $150. each per mo. And as yuo said there is no lag on returning home or a pre-existing condition. We did decide to supplimnet this with a medjet policy, they will fly you home from anywhere in the world and it was only about $200. for a year
