I have always had a policy with these people, and it provides great peace of mind. Bottom line, you get broken anywhere in the world, and they send a medical jet with doctor and nurse to pick you up and take you anywhere you want to go. They are now offering shorter term medical evac insurance-check it out:

Short Term Memberships- Now also a 30 day plan! Traveling this year with non-MedjetAssist members? Don't forget our 7, 14 and 21 day short term membership beginning at only $75. Perfect for friends, family members and the grandkids- everyone can travel with peace of mind. Call our offices at 1-800-963-3538 or enroll on the web at http://www.medjetassist.com/ And as of July 1, 2005 based upon requests from members and potential members alike is a 30 day membership-perfect for students going abroad.

Sounds good, because they cover for up to 75y (have to think about the future) but they are fibbing when they claim that other insurers do not cover air evacuation--Mondial (used by Worldnomads) is the biggest such service in the world.

Also, looks like membership is only available to people in the States.

Once upon a time, you could enjoy similar benefits when you became a member of the Red Cross.

I think that every travel insurance policy I looked at covers medical evacuation -- at least as a relatively cheap add-on option. And I started with World Nomads and then worked my way through at least a dozen - from the backpacker level all the way through travelling executive money-is-no-concern level. My sense is that buying an entirely separate policy for medical evacuation isn't really a very cost effective option. But that's just one person's opinion.
