Hopefully this will be easy for somebody to answer.

I am planning on leaving RTW (for probably 6 months) in early December and I am looking into the shots I'll need. I had heard it can cost around $250 for the lot, which sounds kind of pricey, but if there is no alternative I will do it.

I stopped by an STA Travel here in NYC and got the phone number of a clinic here in town they recommend, and the clinic just quoted me around $550 for what I should get. Ouch!
(I don't have insurance that would help cover any of this, by the way)

My first stop will be Miami for a week or so, then Mexico or Belize, then south from there. I plan on SE Asia eventually, so I'll need whatever you need for there too.

One thing I thought of was to find a cheaper place in Miami, or possibly a much cheaper place in Mexico or Belize. Any thoughts on this approach? Any other advice?

Certain things (like renting a car) are twice as expensive in NYC as they are everywhere else, so I'd rather not just pay that amount if there is a viable alternative.

Thanks,
Roger

I find that pretty high. I got the whole run of shots for about a hundred dollars Canadian. However, I am Canadian, with all the benefits of the hated "socialized medicine."

There have got to be places.

It depends on how many vaccinations that $550 covers. If it's the whole menu, it sounds about right to me. I got 6 for $400 6yrs ago. It can be pricey in Europe too, as health insurance often doesn't cover travel vaccinations. I would say find out what you MUST have and get them before you go. Hep A, Typhoid and Yellow Fever are probably essential. Sometimes clinics cover themselves by saying you need everything. For example, I never got rabies vaccination and don't think it's worth it.

Sounds like alot of money. Try calling other travel clinics in the area and asking what their prices are. If it's about the same, then maybe Miami will be cheaper?

Since you mention STA, if you happen to be a student, definitely call the student health clinic for your school. Tuition dollars go towards subsidizing these clinics, the least we can do is take advantage of them for cheap vaccines.

i waited until i arrived at my destination (this last time, south america) and got them there. my school doesn't have an immunization clinic. but down there the shots were cheap, if not free (i spent $15) and i felt completely comfortable with the cleanliness. many of the immunizations are sold in pharmacies with their own syringes if your concerned about sanitation don't mind paying a little more (no prescription necessary). most clinics will administer them for free. any major city you'd be flying into should have facilities to do this. i saved a ton of money and had one less thing to do before i left...

I can get all the Hep shots for free at my work, I guess I should take advantage of it.

Yes, my suggestion is the county clinic they're usually cheaper.

* I hate getting shots*

Cheers.

Perhaps, but most jobs just attract the pricks.
