Knows What a Schengen Visa Is
Posted
Hi,

I'm hoping to embark on a RTW trip a few months from now. My story is that I'm a cancer survivor and while I've been declared "cured", I still need to have occasional checkups (x-rays and blood work). Can anyone recommend a country where I can have this done and get quality care that's not too expensive (I'll probably have to pay out of pocket)?

Thanks,

Ed

I found South Africa cheap for minor medical stuff, but don't know about more serious procedures. One bonus to SA is that they speak English.

Many thanks to both of you. Based on your responses I did a little internet searching and found the following countries listed as having "first world health care at third world prices":

India
South Africa
Greece
Jordan
Malaysia
Phillipines
Singapore

If anyone knows of other countries that belong on the list, feel free to add them.

I agree completely with Marisa above. My girlfriend has a very rare congenital disease and must have 1st world level medical care (in case of...). We searched for places to live all over the world and Thailand was the first and best choice. Incredibly qualified doctors and hospitals (the private ones) at very good prices (we have insurance...but still).

Bumrungrad in Bangkok is among the best in Asia. People fly from all over Asia (Don Ho did Stem Cell therapy there a year ago - that's how advanced they are) to get their care. Also throughout Thailand is the Bangkok Hospital group.

Even our local dentist is top notch. I had my teeth cleaned, a metal filling replaced with amalgam in less than an hour and for less than $20. I also got a firm lecture about the stiffness of my toothbrush.

Bumrungrad is the most expensive place in Thailand - and arugably the best. They don't have a price list. I would be willing to bet that any work here is at least half the price of the UK.

In the US prices are outrageous, and many people find it cheaper to fly here, get their crowns done, stay for a week "recovering" on a tropical beach and then fly back home.
