Sadly, one of the founding members of a backpackers message board I frequent died of skin cancer recently. Another member who's a medical student as a tribute put some info on melanoma together. I just thought it might be useful to people here as well, so here's her post

yes be careful! I am 21 and have a fare amount of freckles and moles (not like ones that stick up but just like dark freckles ya kmnow) and i have had melanoma and frequently like 3 times a year have to get more taken off that have changed, etc. So make sure you check yourself and have someone check your back too
