For those Stumptowners out there, this one's for you. In prep for our trip in October we have tracked down what appear to be the two travel clinics in the Portland area - The Travel and Immunization Clinic of Portland and the Multnomah County Immunization Clinic.
Anyone out there had experience with either and have any opinions, positive or negative, about either? Staff, cost, ease or appointments/immunizations... As of now we're heading to NZ/Oz, all through SE Asia, China, India, Tanzania, Egypt, Jordan and up on through large portions of east and west Europe. Many thanks to all. I'll owe you a brew, beans or barley, for the help. |

I am two weeks out from starting a year long trip. I lived in Portland for about a year and a half and did my immunizations at the multnomah county travel clinic. I did a little research for the pdx area when I was looking for immunization resources. There are a couple - check out PSU's website - there's a link for students looking for immunizations. There's even a clinic (a doctor's name) that does not charge a consult fee. Only downside is that they were only available one day a week and didn't know from week to week which day that would be (sounded strange to me). Anyways... MCTC charged about $65 for the consult and then immunizations are per dose (you can find all the actual costs via their website). Their consult was pretty thorough. But they were a bit baffled by the length and multiple destinations planned for my trip. Most shots need multiple visits... and they do charge a reduced rate for each subsequent office visit. Overall - not a bad experience... but a little pricey if you ask me.

Thanks, Chris. We had researched Mult. Co. and the Travel and Immunization Clinic up by Good Sam. Decided to go with Mult. Co. based mostly on cost. We had similar feelings during our initial appointment (a little frazzled over our itinerary, what shots we would actually need, etc...), but overall it was good. I hadn't seen the info that PSU has on their website, but I like it. A few more than I had seen previously. Here's what it's gonna run (first cost is MC, second is T&IC). DAMN!
The jabs have started so there's no excuses to not go out and test these new found immunities! Multnomah County Travel & Imm Clinic Blue Cross? Initial Visit $65 $50 Vaccine Admin Fees $0 $39 Hep A - 1 of 2 $70 $80 Covered Hep B - 1 of 3 $63 $90 Polio $45 $50 Tetanus $38 $40 Rabies - 1 of 3 $185 $220 Follow-Up Visit $20 $25 Vaccine Admin Fees $0 $18 Hep A - 2 of 2 $70 $80 Covered Hep B - 2 of 3 $63 $90 Rabies - 2 of 3 $185 $220 Follow-Up Visit $20 $25 Vaccine Admin Fees $0 $18 Hep B - 3 of 3 $63 $90 Rabies - 3 of 3 $185 $220 Typhoid $65 $72 $1,137 $1,427 Yellow Fever? $95 $115 Vaccine Admin Fees $0 $6 $1,232 $1,548 |

You may want to wait till you get to SE Asia.(I'm assuming you don't need vaccines for NZ/OZ). You'll save a ton of money. I'm in Thailand and it's so much cheaper to get them done here than back in the States. Just make sure you get them as soon as you arrive in SE Asia.

I went to whichever one is downtown on 5th. I think that is Multnomah County. The experience was fine from what I remember.
You should be able to get the Twinrix shot which combines Hep A & B and will probably save you money. You also don't really need rabies more than likely. It isn't bad to have, but all it does is give you more time to get to medical help for more shots. If you want to save money, that would be one to cut. |

I went to the one up in NW on Flanders last fall and it was fine - but that was just to get a prescription for antibiotics. I was in and out of there pretty quickly though. I got my shots 7 or 8 years ago at the travel clinic that used to actually be in Good Sam, but it's closed now.
If I had to do it all over again, I'd do what EMH is suggesting. I got pretty sick in Vietnam in 2001 and ended up going to whatever that hospital is in Bangkok in the Silom area. It was absolutely top-notch. I saw a doctor within 20 minutes of walking in the front door, had bloodwork done, got the results 30 minutes later, was given a prescription and ended up paying $23 (I just looked back at my notes and checked). You can't beat that. I imagine immunizations are also really well priced. |

I did get my done in Thailand though I had to go to two different places because the hospital was out of Hepatatis A.
So...the cost of getting Typhoid and the first Hepatitis B shot was $45. Total. Hepatitis A was an additional $35. |
