Began Gap Year Trip Six Years Ago

first off, i HATE going to the doctor's. i do everything i can to avoid it. so if this is something i can just ride out, then yay!

for the first week i was in thailand, i didn't have much of an appetite. it would have been easy for me to not eat for a whole day (and sometimes i didn't).. so i usually just made myself eat some rice. then a week or so later, i started pigging out. well not really.. but i was eating more. at least two real meals a day, and every other street vendor. mmm banana pancakes..

this is the second week i've been back from thailand. just like the first week there, i haven't had much of an appetite here. what's different is that now, everytime i do eat something, my stomach cramps up and i have to lay down or just sit there trying to keep my stomach area warm. it usually goes away after a little bit.

my friend took me out to dinner earlier (and my stomach started hurting so i barely finished my dish!) and she said that her bf's sis was in shanghai for a couple of weeks before meeting up with them in hawaii. she noticed that there, his sis wasn't eating much. so is this a common thing?? what the hell is going on?? has this happened to any of you guys??

Extended travel can really mess with your appetite. That's how I was for a year. Not to be gross, but the more obvious sign of if something is wrong is on the other end. When you go to the toilet, if things are screwy for more then a few days, then you should worry. If not, I'd say wait it out for a bit and see if it improves. However, I'm no doctor!

lol i think your response was the best attempt ever at making something gross, ungross. actually i'm fine except for the after-meal cramps. it actually feels like a cramp i'd get on my period (sorry guys Razz lol). well my friend's dragging me to the doctor tomorrow anyway.. i guess cuz he's sick of me being a grumpy little bitch. Wink i hope i don't get a tube shoved down my nose or something. Frown thanks PC! Smile

I used to have a lot of trouble eating when I went on trips also. Not only for long distance trips, but also shorter ones. I am from the US and sometimes a vacation to a different state would just mess me up eating wise and I would never be hungry. When I would return home I would not regain my appetite for a few days.

On longer trips, such as across the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean, I would think this would be pretty common. Changing to a time zone that can be 6-12 hours different from what you are used to will mess up your internal body clock. On my last trip to Europe I did not have an appetite for most of my first week, but eventually it came back around.

This is normal and nothing I would really worry about. Then again, I am no doctor (just playing one on this thread).

Xoom,

You mentioned you wanted to go to Tibet from Nepal. If you want to see something GROSS, wait until you experience a tibetnan toilet, or lack there of. Generally, it's a hole in the ground, but on the second story so there is room for all the shit to pile up.

Sorry, I had to make up for my being polite on this other post. Wink

Going from past experience of Thailand, mineral and vitamin imbalance (from sweating, not from the food) is a common culprit. My advice, when in Thailand do as the Thai's do..... You'll find those little bottles of mineral and vitamin tonic in all the shops, usually in the fridges next to the soda (it's a bit overpoweringly sweet but you get used to it). Gulp down at least one of those a day (I took to having them just before breakfast) and you'll be fine. Or maybe it's just me..... I haven't had any problems the last few times I was in Thailand anyways......
