CNN) -- Health officials in New York City are alarmed after a man infected with a highly drug-resistant strain of HIV progressed to full-blown AIDS within months of diagnosis.

That raises the possibility that a hard-to-treat variant of the virus could be spreading among gay and bisexual men who use the drug methamphetamine.

"This case is a striking reminder that the risk of getting infected with HIV has not gone away," said Dr. Jay Dobkin, director of the AIDS program at Columbia University.

"In fact, risky behavior may be even more dangerous now since there is a change of infection with a virus we may not be able to treat," Dobkin said in a press release from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

That's damn scary.

this just made my day significantly worse. Frown

when will there be a cure? drug trails are beginning now, in certain parts of the world.. but it seems as though as soon as we figure out how to begin treating one type, a bunch others pop up. i know it doesn't mean we should just give up, but damn.. it almost looks hopeless. Frown

Its to be expected with the high population of men and women who are infected with HIV, have unprotected sex, and take HIV medications.

It is nearly impossible to outflank a virus that can multiply and spread almost at will, aided by human sexual behavior. Viruses and Bacteria mutate on a regular basis.

What a strangely worded article --

"That raises the possibility that a hard-to-treat variant of the virus could be spreading among gay and bisexual men who use the drug methamphetamine."

What about the gay and bisexual men practicing unsafe sex who do not use the drug methamphetamine? The article makes it sound as if they are not at risk - unless they fall within the group that uses meth.
