As I just got home from an annual check-up, I'm curious if anyone has had to have dental work while overseas. I'm most interested in S.E. Asia as that's where I'll be, but any good stories are appreciated.

Nothing worse than losing a filling or chipping a tooth and not being able to get to the dentist.

I'd think someplace like Singapore or Bangkok you could probably get quality treatment, but I wonder about rural Laos or Cambodia...

I don't know about dental work, but I had to get stitches in Laos with no anesthesia. That was a lot of fun! I'ld deffinitely take care of whatever you can before you leave.

Peace.

Bear, why you gotta scare me like that??? I plan on visiting Loas and I'm incredibly clumsy--maybe I'll bring my own anesthesia (is that legal?!)

Menudio, just don't go flying around like a dumb ass(that's me) on a junky old motorbike and you'll be fine. I was on my way back from the falls near Luang Prabang, it's a beautiful ride and the falls look fake from the top. There's also a rope swing on the top to keep playful adults busy for a long time(look for it). You're gonna love it!!!

Peace.

It is kinda funny to see this topic. I was at my denist and she was like busy fixing up appts with clients who were flying down from overseas, generally the U.S. and even Canada for dental treatment such as root canal and artificial caps and bridges. Neat way to combine a holiday and save money.

I had some dental work done at the Phuket/ Bangkok Hospital in Phuket. Quality work and the price was 80% less than what my Dentist charges here in Florida. I couldn't have been happier with care I was given. Look at http://www.phukethospital.com/

Mike,

Thanks for the info and the link. It's good to hear about your happy experience. Of course, a happier experience will be to simply not need any medical or dental help at all.Wink

i had a root canal done in bangkok. no problem whatsoever. modern, clean. really cheap too. of course, it's no fun to have to spend two weeks of your trip going through a dental procedure, but that's life...
i imagine that anywhere with a significant uperclass (and expats) would have good medical care somewhere.

I leave in Chicago. Every once in couple years I go to Thailand for vacation also to do some major dental work there. It's cheap, clean. Mostly they do what they have to do not offer a fancy things but you can ask for.

Food for thought guys. Was going to get some stuff done before I go - but what I can't fit in - may get done in Thailand - especially as its sooooo expensive in London for tooth whitening etc.

Hi, I'm actually delaying my next dental appointment until I get to SE Asia. My friend had a lot of dental treatment in Bangkok and it was clean, professional, friendly and a lot cheaper than Europe. I can't afford to go to the denist here; it's too expensive. I prefer spending my money on travelling!!

Jennie,

Do you know where your friend had her work done?? I am feeling a cavity coming on, and I'll be in Bangkok in less than 2 months.

Thanks.

Hi, I don't know the name but I can find out for you. I think that it was in the Siam shopping centre on the 3rd or 4th floor. I may be mistaken but I'll ask my ex for you!!From what I rememebr it was a shopping mall with clothes shops and restaurants and we had to go up lots of escalators to get to it and it was tucked in a corner of the mall. I also had a foot massage in a beauty spa on the floor below whilst he had his teeth done.

PC - i don't remember the name of the place i went, but it was recommended to me by my guest house owner - their family dentist.
the guesthouse was Suk 11 and i would really recommend it - the nicest place i have ever stayed. and they completely took care of me during the whole root canal process.

Hey, check out my new blog:
