I asked my GP the other day, while getting my Havrix shot: "Do people actually get seriously sick while backpacking?" We discussed it, and came to the conclusion, that although we were both mildly experienced travellers, the worst we'd heard off, were the odd cases of Malaria and Yellow Fever... So I was wondering, has any of you got any horror stories, personal experiences of nasty tropical disease while backpacking?

Hope to stay healthy, R.

I had diarrhea for 3 weeks in Indonesia although that's not too serious.

My friend was in India when an Indian approached him and asked if he had any medication. My friend said no but the Indian wanted my friend to come into his house and take a look at his condition. He had elephantitis in his testicles and they were the size of grapefruits. The thing that really amazed my friend though was how linber the guy was. Apparently he dropped from a standing poster to a crossed legged one in a single fluid motion, he knees bouncing on the floor. My friend was just amazed.
