Trolling for Groupies

Hello folks,

I went in for a physical about a month ago, and my bloodwork came back with elevated liver enzymes, which is apparantly a bad thing. So, I went back to the doc a few weeks later to get blood drawn again to check my liver and also to get tested for hepatitis. Hep came back negative, and enzyemes are still elevated. I'm scheduled to get an ultrasound Nov 9, and I leave for Oz Jan 4. I'm terrified the doctor is going to tell me something horrible, and I'm not going to be able to take my trip! Has this happened to any of you before?

Well, I guess that's what I get for going to the damn doctor!

Not just before travel, but I did have some routine blood tests done several years ago which showed up some elevated liver readings. They gave me the option of a biopsy (cutting a slit in your stomach and snipping a piece of liver out using local anaesthetic) or going on a low cholesterol diet. Guess which one I took :-) I was low-cholesterol for 2 months and my next test was much better. To be clear, it wasn't just a cholesterol problem, but did have an impact.

I wouldn't worry about it too much . Elevated liver enzymes can be caused by several different things, like Hepatitis ( which is already ruled out), alcohol consumption or just inflammation. It sounds like you have plenty of time to get to the bottom of it before you trip. Good luck!

How's your diet? Taking any medication? Your liver's job is eliminating toxins, so a diet of Mc Donald's, Cheetos and twinkies washed down with alcohol and a few meds would have quite an effect on your liver. Of course, the doctor would hardly bother to ask you a question like that... Just a thought :-)

I spoke of this whole thing with a friend who is a herbalist. He said to boil cornsilk (fresh or powdered) in water for 15 minutes, then let it sit for 6 hours. Drain through a filter (cheesecloth) and drink a cup twice a day. He called it a natural liver booster.

Take it or leave it - I may try it - got nothing to lose, and I've punished my poor hardworking liver on more than one occasion.

I'm actually a vegetarian, just a fat, outta shape one. I don't drink often, take no meds, etc. So, just my extra body weight straining it I reckon. That's the only symptom I could think of.

Nuh uh Kath!

That was actually the first thing I ask the doctor, and she said it couldn't.

So, nah nah!
