19: Fraser Island
George Dunn came to the conclusion that visiting Fraser Island on a self-drive tour is like living out the first episode of the show Survivor.

I myself am a big fan of George and his Oz travelogue (ok, I'm a fan of any Oz travelogue, I'm not picky).

Anyone else been to Fraser Island? I've been told it's a must-do but I know barely anything about it (except that it's a must-do).

You can go on your own, right? I mean, if you have your own 4x4. You don't have to buy a package through an outfitter, do you?

Ya I've heard you can go on your own, but the beach is now a traffic jam of 4x4 tours

That's what I've heard. Seems there should be a way of regulating that. Of course, that would mean less tourist $$.

It is an interesting place.

You don't need to be on an organised tour and can hire 4WDs and drive yourself.

I followed a friends advice and caught the bus over before transferring to the 4WD coach for the day trip. At the end of that, a friend and I walked back along the beach and swagged it for the night.

The dingoes were bad but not dangerous... We explored the next day, but were having a huge amount of trouble with the march flies (which bite pretty badly).

But check out the story (Fraser Island pics) and click on the galleries for heaps of pics from when I was there about three years ago.

Just follow the advice of the locals when it comes to storage of food and swimming in the ocean.

The dingo thing on Fraser Island...the warnings you have been given are very valid. A kid was stalked and killed while he and his brother were walking on the beach.

I've tracked down the news reprot for you.

Such a horrible story. On our first night at Fraser's we camped right near the site where it happened. The ranger told us the story and directed us over to a sign that had a picture of the boy and a brief overview of the story.

When a dingo attacks someone, or even begins to act aggresively, the rangers put it down. If a dingo is fed by a human, the rangers have to put it down. The ranger told us that they all cary sling shots, and when they see a dingo they give it a shot right in the haunches, to try to make them afraid of humans.
