RE: http://www.bootsnall.com/articles/07-06/crabs-patriotis...re-maryland-usa.html

Isn't it interesting that in an article meant to show the insular, xenophobic nature of the United States (which I agree is, more often that not, very apparent and infuriating), the author actually engages in the same activity she seems to be chastizing. Why would you expect the average man at a bar in Baltimore to know that outcome of a cricket game? I certainly wouldn't go into a bar in South Africa and assume that the man sitting next to me would know the score of the Orioles game. Instead of worrying about the baseball score, I would attend a cricket match. It is human nature to compare and contrast, and to think that the way it is done at home is better, but traveling is much more pleasant and eye-opening if you let go of the stereotypes and prejudices, share yourself with others, and yes, as you say, take a look in. Isn't that the point of going?

This article reminds me of a classic quote from the movie Wedding Crashers: "Crab cakes and football, THAT'S WHAT MARYLAND DOES!"

Wow, an article with sweeping generalizations about Americans gleaned from a trip to a bar and a bookstore in Baltimore. (A working class city where less than half the populace can afford to travel.)

Thanks for the penetrating insight into the inward-gazing nature of the American soul. Roll Eyes
