I did a similar trip over 20 years ago, on my own (a small, 40 year old woman) on public transport. In fact, I spent 3 months in China and Tibet, entering via Hong Kong and leaving via Kashgar. Had no guide and didn't speak any Chinese!!

In that time I spent £295 cUS$600 for absolutley everything.

This was part of a 55 week trip I did around Asia on my own.
