This is one of the most amazing travel stories I have read on this site, so I would like to thank the writer and urge everyone else to read it too.

Thank you Karlien,

Spectacular. Humbling and inspiring all at once. Thanks for pointing it out.

attaboy- how much Russian did u learn? I wish u cud have spkn to those three ...I wish that didnt have to happen, but then again, what would the journey be without them, the gun, and little Uzbek- the journey of life and yours too.

The downside is, now I feel like I shouldn't have bothered writing down my own experiences in Siberia. I mean I went at the height of summer, travelled by public transport, didn't go very far off the beaten track, and I didn't witness anyone die. What was I thinking? I might as well have written a story about an exciting visit to my local park.

If anyone feels compelled to read my story anyway, here it is: http://www.bootsnall.com/articles/04-01/summer-in-siberia-siberiarussian-federation.html

Alistair,

Thank you for this Siberian meditation. I always have a bit of an existential crisis on my birthday too. I am on my way to Uzbekistan for the Peace Corps, so if you make it to the Silk Road within the next two years look for me.
