Can you name your top 3 favorite things about NYC? I'd love to hear.

Wow..that's a tough one.
Ok..top 3 places:
Top of Rockefeller Center (took my breath away)
Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island (made my heart beat faster)
Central Park (calmed my spirit) barely saw 10% of it!!

Miscellaneous:
Subway/Buses (wonderful, clean, ride all day and meet/see great people/places)
Street Food on most any corner (good deal for $)
Grocery stores!! Sounds strange, but they were awesome for variety and culture.
And the people I met; wonderful, helpful, fun.

Best thing I liked was the ability to get around easily on foot, with subways, and busses. What a great way to be able to see a city - most American cities are not easy to get around without a car...I never did take a cab. I got a discount on the super shuttle to/from airport, so that was a $ saver too.

Excellent. I'm glad you got to TOTR. I enjoyed most of the things you did (but didn't go to Ellis/Liberty). I loved the grocery stores. I'm used to supermarkets and loved the incredible variety of foods and the atmosphere of the small NYC markets. I'm glad you had such a great time. Your experience is kinda persuading me to maybe take a trip there by myself if scheduling becomes an issue for friends. I'd love to be there during the Tribeca Film Festival. I'll know more in the spring.

My favorite part of NYC? The architecture. It's a regular feast for the eyes!

I absolutely agree about the architecture! It breaks my heart to see the fabulous old buildings with the impressive carvings and filigree being destroyed and replaced by these metal/glass monstrosities. Harlem is the next target for 'gentrification' - big box stores, etc. The community will no longer be a 'community'...a few will make lots of money up front, but there will be a complete loss of the character and feel of the burough. (OT I know, but it's happening everywhere.) I took so many photos of doors, entries, facades, etc. Stonework that is 'alive' with cherubs, leaves, gargoyles, etc. And it's everywhere. Please try to do a trip by yourself...it's great to go when/where you want without consulting companions who may not have the same desires (like dinner at 9 pm) or a 10 block walk to the river....happy travels

Wow - 1800 posts!! I'm totally awed!! My next adventure/trip is to Costa Rica...6weeks and counting the days. I'm excited and so looking forward to seeing the rain forests and the volcano. I love outdoors (but not particularly sleeping outside)...and flora/fauna are supposed to be magnificent there, so that's my next step. After that I'm hanging out for the winter in South Texas, hoping for a few side trips into Mexico. That's about it till next March when I return home and finish remodeling my kitchen (no sink right now...)sorta camping out at home.

IF you enjoy being able to get around on foot get out of your comfort zone and head for Europe- Paris is a great start for many people - grab a phrase book and go - there is a lot of world out there outside of the USA
