Hi,

So here I am at 37 and heading out on a year long trip around the world in a few weeks... now as I get closer I realize I need a very good check list of items that I need to bring (and not to bring) on my trip.

Can you share your check list with me... and suggestions of things that would be handy to have or things that just got in the way?

I leave Toronto going west to BC, the Hawaii, NZ, Fiji, Oz, then several months in Asia, the Middle East and a bit of Europe before heading back to Canada.

Let me know.

Thanks for your help!

Ralph

I can only reflect on my RTW trip of 1972. I brought a parka for skiing in Austria, Army fatigues (just out), and by the time I got to India sveral months later, I needed only their light weight clothes, flip-flops, toiletries, and camera stuff. that's it! Books weighed the most. It all depends on the weather.

There's a lot of info about this on different web sites and on the bna gear branch. Much depends on the climate where you will be going. Check out onebag.com. Do a google search if this doesn't come up.

There are also some good books. The Traveler's Tool Kit is one. Try searching "Travel Light" or "Backpackers Travel" and you'll find much good info online. I was in your shoes a few months ago and now I almost have too much info.

Keep to light quick-dry clothes or light cottons. Heavier cottons take too long to dry. Some of the new micro fibers are good and dry fast. Think in terms of daily washing out of clothes in the sink. They also make small absobent towells. Silk sleeping sacs are light and you probably won't need a sleeping bag or tent if you are hosteling.

Everyone says is you can buy cheap clothes anywhere in the world. Buy a jacket in Nepal if you need it rather than carting around the world. Your shoes and pack will be the hard things to replace if lost or worn out. Layer, layer, layer for warmth when you need it. Stay away from heavy bulky clothes or bags.

Good luck!
