Hi there , I have never posted before but read lots of your mail. Does anyone know about retirement in India or anyone who is retired and living in India? Coming up 60 and do not want to be living in a western country. Currently working in China. Appreciate any info.

All I can think of is Auroville. I am stuck in office at present and loaded with work, so request you to please do a google search of auroville and pondicherry. It is a community centre in south india with people from various countries as residents. see if this fits in with your needs.

I have thought about this as well, if the social security system doesn't go belly-up in the next 30 years. All I know is I've been told that India has some of the best cardiac specialists in the world - anyone who's eaten a rich Punjabi meal(like I did last night:-)...) can imagine why. Although many Indians are vegetarians, the high ghee/cream content of foods must cause lots of heart problems. So if you are prone to heart disease it might be something to think about. I would love to retire in India, possibly to live at a Buddhist nunnery.

I do not know much about retiring in India. However, I have been reading this blog http://www.retire2india.com/2007/09/10-best-places-to-retire-in-india.html which is about that very subject.

How did it all work out comrades? The Buddhist nunnery in a Hindu country, the choice of India for its superior medical facilities, the geriatric commune in south India? I'd love to hear. Love India, I'll be back soon, but I've never quite seen it as a retirement option.

Lot of Europeans...especially from UK retire or semi retire in India. Goa is one of the hot spots. Buying land, buying a house or apt in India are not easy for Non Citizens (can be done but lots more hassel and under the table dealings). As for Goa its pretty late..the whole state has been taken over by the Russian Mob.

I've never been to Goa, and I'm arrogant enough to think that I live within 30 minutes of some of the best beaches in the world. I think that if I were to retire to India (and this is extremely unlikely)it would be to somewhere in the Himalayan foothills.
But I think I'll sample the south next time I'm over there. Tiger Airlines make all of this so much more feasible.
