I wanted to show a friend today's whygo.com picture (by a world famous, incredibly talented photographer) but she told me it was blocked by her company (a bank) as 'explicate content'!

Have you all heard of this before? or is there a secret 'hot and heavy' whygo section that I don't know of???

Hmm - interesting. Thanks for letting us know. Maybe in months past a breast was shown on some pic and someone tagged it as inappropriate for work. Who knows?

I'll check around a bit more and see if it was flagged somewhere.

And yet they can get onto BnA? That theory doesn't hold...I personally waste far more time on BnA rather than whygo.com!!!

Sometimes innocent sites get on long ban lists by mistake. Companies license these ban lists and sync them to their network. It looks like whygo.com got on one.

The problem is that it's a little like a no-fly list. Who to go to is a bit difficult to find out.

Maybe it would be fruitful to ask the friend if they can send the network admin's email address, contact him/her, and find out which company makes their ban list.

My company blocks myspace, hotmail, youtube, a number of sites w/ jokes, games, etc, online shoe retailers, and anything w/ lots of bad words. Whygo is ok though (so is BnA!). I think it differs depending on security software bought at a corporate level. Probably nothing you really can do about it.

If it means anything BnA was blocked at my old work simply because it had a forum section.

Damn the man!

Hmm, I just ran into this problem. I guess I usually get my whygo fix at home.

Anyway, if it helps, the logo that showed up on the block page was Websense Enterprise.

My sister who works for a large educational organization in California, was blocked from whygo.com, but she has access to National Geographic's user photo submission system. So, I had her send me the warning message details.

The internet usage policy is geared towards porn, and not 'goofing off at work.' (I've quoted below.) It really does seem like whygo.com is classified as porn in some blocking systems and that is why so many people have problems.

The blocking software was called "Websense", which I gather is somewhat popular. The have a support link where one can, after registration, lookup and submit URLs for review. I like you all and stuff, but I'm also a lazy git and not going to make the effort.

Hope this helps...

Questions and Answers on Filtering

Why filter?
The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and other federal policies like Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA) require us to protect students and staff. Part of that protection requires the provider of Internet service to impose technology to enforce both the district acceptable use policy and any federal or state policies.

Why now?
The ********'s AUP has been in effect for several years. Additionally October 28th, 2001 was the deadline provided by the federal government to impose technology to filter based on local, state, and federal policy. If we did not filter by this date, we would be at risk of loosing more than 100 million dollars in federal and state funding.

Why are anonymous email providers being blocked?
Anonymous email providers are just that anonymous. Anyone can create an account with fake information and begin direct communications with other students, teachers, staff and outside people. These anonymous emails can be inappropriate by name and content. These anonymous email providers do not restrict who gets an account, thereby leaving students, teachers, and staff at risk of being the recipients of inappropriate mail without any consequences to the sender. The CIPA makes specific reference to "the safety and security of minors when using electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communications."

...

What are the general criteria for filtering?
Primarily access to websites that have pornographic and hate content as well as web-based chat and anonymous email sites. The follwing is from CIPA:

(l) INTERNET SAFETY POLICY REQUIREMENT FOR SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES.--
(1) IN GENERAL.--In carrying out its responsibilities under subsection (h), each school or library to which subsection (h) applies shall--
(A) adopt and implement an Internet safety policy that addresses--
(i) access by minors to inappropriate matter on the Internet and World Wide Web;
(ii) the safety and security of minors when using electronic mail, chat rooms, and other forms of direct electronic communications;
(iii) unauthorized access, including so-called `hacking', and other unlawful activities
by minors online;
(iv) unauthorized disclosure, use, and dissemination of personal identification information regarding minors; and
(v) measures designed to restrict minors' access to materials harmful to minors;

Absolutely right, Stoo. I signed up for websense and used their site look-up tool to see how they had classified Why Go and sure enough it was categorized as 'sex'. Not sure how the hell that happened but I have submitted it for review and we should know more in a day or so.

Thanks for hunting this down for us.
