I mentioned this idea in the book forum, but I suppose it really belongs here: so many of us seem to be avid readers, and though I know that the book club idea is disgustingly trendy at the moment, what if we organized something similar here?

Maybe each month we'd have one book, at least tangentially travel-related and pretty easy to get your hands on. We could post the book on, say, the first, then open discussion on the fifteenth, so people have time to read. Or open discussion right away, but put it in its own little forum, so people can talk about other books without seeing spoilers for the book club one.

It sounds great if you guys want to organize it - we can give you your own private forum if you'd like.

Good idea Brittany,

I would like to participate in this as well...we could keep it private as Court suggested or simply, on the 1st a thread would be started with the Book of the Month and the discussion could stem off of that. The thread could be a monthly thread in our public Book Forum (ie Listen, Look, and Learn)

Sounds cool... I'm going to be off travelling for most of November, but will have some time for it amidst the chaos. Maybe a December first-ish start date.

oh yes - I'll play!

We probably better give quite a bit of notice of what we are going to read - those travelling or who like to buy books from shops rather than amazon might need some time to get hold of the book.

maybe we should consider reading books that are also available as e-books.......

If you have some suggestions PM me... I will also be wandering through the bookshops in London and Nashville during the next couple of weeks to pick up ideas.

I might be interested as well... depending entirely on my book budget and the availability of used versions of the selected book.

Sounds good to me. I'd have to go to Amazon for my book, since in the winter I work far from any large Borders, and the library isn't the biggest.

I just need to know if there are any websites that have current books available online. My work as a photojournalist/writer depends on recent materials. I know there are plenty of online libraries and e-books but are there any out there where you can pay a membership, perhaps, that carry the books, magazines, journals, etc. that are on the market NOW?

Netts, I don't see how a book about Catholic theology relates to travel. No, I'm not mad enough to read that book. It's true I am a fan of CS Lewis, who, totally unlike me, was a devout Christian, but I don't read CS Lewis for the Christian thing. It's true I have touched on the Catholic church in my writing. But, I am far too heavily lapsed to read theological treatises and I am not a fan of the church anyway, (though I like looking inside churches). It would be too much like the author preaching to the unconverted.
Or am I making a rash assumption here? Is Pope Benedict's book about travel and there's some kind of philosophy tied up with it? As long as it isn't the homespun philosophy of the Alchemist with its easy solutions and questionable intellectual depth then there might be something to be said for reading it.
Book club, go ahead. Stop just talking about it and let's get going!
