And yes Jessie, looks like it's initially a 7.5/10 on latest foray.

But looking at a few what might be called stray threads for want of a better description and reading occasionally how people might "hit the wall", have "had a bad moment", or just be generally stressed, I thought maybe it would be good to have a forum on board Entertainment and Fun, just a place people can head for some light hearted relief with some games and ongoing threads.

I was thinking that in this forum would be grouped:
. Where is this
. Various other geography games (there's been a few that have come up and with limit on saving threads they are gone)
. Non Sequitur
. Inane Comments (if we must!) Smile
. Maybe even Photo and URL of the day
. A jokes thread

and of course any others suitable that I have missed or come along.

To keep it uncluttered, there could be a rule that if a new thread is not frequented then it can go back to Chit Chat or wherever.

What say you all

Thanks for the suggestion, GN; I think that - at least for the moment - "entertainment" and "fun" stuff is just what the Chit Chat Forum was intended for, so I don't really see the need for a specific forum just for entertainment & fun stuff. At least not now. Smile

It can be that indeed Jessie but it has so much more and some of it pretty heavy if not angst causal.

In addition, posts that had geography games references have to be hunted for.

How about a forum for Jester? Maybe we could merge it with the proposed Inane Comments forum?

people keep tossing around the "inane comments" thread as though it is some sort of plaything, something to be kicked around and chided.

for some of us, it is our very lifeblood.

I am truly sorry Zopa...it was cruel, insensitive and reckless of me to even suggest any commonality between Inane Comments and Jester!

If there are posts people want to not lose track of, they can subscribe to them or add those threads to their "favorites" list. Then there's no more hunting. Smile

Had not used subscribing yet Jess, but does that not work by just giving you notification of when there has been a post, and as to favourites, well that has limited memory.

Not wanting to make this a "you can't win with a woman discussion, let alone a manageress" but just thought it would make for a tidy service to members/travellers for a bit of light relief, and who knows, word spreads on the road and maybe it draws in new members.

And I have been constantly reminded in life on how some women if not most just love tidiness.

Actually, I was thinking the opposite. That all that stuff is fine for chit chat, BUT...drum roll...

I have a good idea that's not going to sound good at first.

What we should have is a People and News Forum. I know you can't picture it at first, but it's a good idea. It separates that from Chit chat, which is not all that neccessary, but it does keep people from feeling like, wow chit chat is getting to serious, or wow, I'm a boob because I want celeb gossip and I don't care at the momment that North Korea might blow us all to hell.

It gives us mental permission to be ecclectic, and who would have thought that segregation could accomplish that, but I say it would and I'm right.

Picture an Oprah Winfrey thread. There are many themes related to her, and if new news came out, we just search for her name and resurrect the thread with a new post.
Some names would only get a few posts and then fall down the board, but in the future when something happens, boom, resurrection and it's all in one neat and tidy spot.

There are TONS of news items to post, but people feel guilty putting that in chit chat. We had a lively thread about the Pope...perfect. The Pope is likely to do something newsworthy again, boom, resurrected topic.

Angelina Jolie/Madonna types do gooders or whatever
people like Paul Theroux...
The TSA Topics.
George Bush and possie...
Nobel Prize winners -the latest guy is worth talking about with his micro lending system to the poor.
Ghandi
The new appointee for the UN...
Donald Trump
Jules Verne
Noam Chomsky
Pat Robertson

Then chit chat could really be for chit chat.

I've noticed a trend also where the moderators are shutting down threads where people are not attacking each other. The mods just arbitrarily don't enjoy the tough subject matter. Well, if it has its own place, then we can never-mind the bullocks. Just let it be...and how about that John Lennon, and Paul McCartney? I put it to you that after warming up to the forum, an individual's creativity might be sparked in ways I'm not able to be foretell or predict at this time, kind of like the way capitalism works...(oh, there's another loaded one).

Traveller personalities are interested in the world, period.
That's why we're here. People and News.

So you mean Jedi having like an Oprah Thread , and then a Popey one too and put them all in the one forum - yeah, I'd be cool with that except for Jester wanting his there.

Sort of being tidy like in having entertainment and fun as a forum too, and maybe that beautiful and lovely Manageress Jess might give us all some Chrissy presents.

To me all of that is chit-chat. The problem may then just be that we all define that a bit differently.

ITA with skobb.

There have been lots of discussions of late on new forums, and a lot of that has been in the vein of limiting new ones. That said, no one should feel guilty about posting news items in chit chat. Fer chrissakes, that's what it's for!

Yes, it is good to have discussion so as to hear of peoples reasoning and as is happening, the introduction of new forums and the maintaining of existing ones should be monitored and reviewed.
But let's not knock on the head new ideas because of perceptions that limiting new ones is the consensus.
There is something called resistance to change and it is all too easy to be comfortable with what is rather than take an opportunity to enjoy more.

I am not knocking it...I am disagreeing with the need for the forums proposed. I think new forums are fine, as long as there aren't currently ones already serving the same purpose (which is why the staying put didn't work).

I am in no way resistant to change, but to me there is no sense in changing for change's sake. And I am also looking at it from a usability POV.

That's fine, but I think we need a news forum, at least. The obits would fit in there better, too. It's chit chatty but so is everything else on this board.

Maybe you have heard the saying "nothing ever stays the same" or in my book there's a lot that doesn't.

I agree with not changing for change's sake but sometimes, even from a usability POV, there are improvements that can be made - the same purpose is served, but just a little better or more easily done - it's called progress.

Reason why you may have a 2000something model car if you have one as against a 1990 model or a horse and cart.

I think having too many forums could just make it harder to find what you are looking for, since you never know who may post what where. One person's "Entertainment" is another's "Chit-Chat" - so I think you'd have to go searching in both anyway over time. We all define what is chit-chat, news-worthy, or fun-and-games differently.

I think using Favorites and Notifications to make your own custom tailored list of thread you track is a great idea. And use the "new since last visit" function to scan for new topics across all boards.

gonorth: I hear you that the Favorites may have a limit to how many threads you can list, and managing a Favorites list could get out of hand. But I find Notifications to work quite well though. I simply subscribe to threads of interest and whenever someone posts a reply, it comes to my inbox.

But how can one be notified when a new thread is posted, you ask? Here's how:

Simply subscribe to the entire "chit-chat" board (or any forum, for that matter). For example, from Chit-chat simply click "notify" at the top and choose the type of notification you want. This will alert you whenever a new topic is posted. Be careful checking the "include replies" check box, you'll then be flooded with all replies to all threads. Probably better just to go subscribe to threads of interest.

Hope this helps.
