Im going down to jamaica sometime in october for a wedding..but the whole wedding party is meant to be staying at some hardcore resort...since im not really a resort person, i was thinking about just flying into montego bay, and making my own way overland to negril and staying in hostels rather than in some stuffy resort.

I'm a little concerned with some of the posts i have been reading about jamaica, and i was wondering if anyone can add anything more to it, or anything in particular i should know about??

Hey, Jordanna:

Have you tried asking one of our Insiders for their opinion? You might have some luck there... I hope so!

Ciao,
Jessie

I have been pretty surprised by a lot of Jamaica posts on here myself. I didn't have much trouble at all on a one-week solo trip to the Montego Bay area staying in low-budget hotels. Just keep your wits about you and I think you'll have a great time. I even had some "independent tour guides" take me up into a poor mountainside village about 30 miles outside of Montego Bay--just be sure to agree on a price beforehand if you do anything like that.

I wasn't able to find any actual "hostels" in the area, but check out the Caribic House... found a couple roaches and lizards, but it was safe, right across the street from the beach, included A/C and a fridge, and was--in my opinion--unbeatable for the price.

Be warned, everyone in Jamaica will have something to sell you, but "no thanks" means the same thing there as it does here.

I had a great time while I was there this past July. Of course I was with people who practically live there and know the locals. We stayed at Citronella (it's on the cliffs in west Negril). They have a website... www.citronellajamica.com. The staff was friendly and helpfull. We shared the big house that held 5-8 people and it came to around $100 for the week. They have smaller accomodations.
