Holds PhD in Packing |
I'm interested in doing a dive trip around December in the Caribbean. I'll probably be going by myself as I don't know anyone who might be able to go. I've never been to the caribbean really, other than Belize. What are some good backpacker places in the caribbean where there is also some good diving? I would like to avoid resorts and crowds if possible.

Look into going to Dominica. It's small, there aren't a lot of big resorts and it definitely has a backpacker vibe. Plus using the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, the cost of travel, room and board, etc. is relatively inexpensive. Getting there can be the most expensive part of the trip, but if you are looking to do some island hopping, look into take the boat from Martinique or Guadeloupe.
As for diving, there are endless possibilities. I don't dive myself, but when traveling there I met many people who said that it was some of the best diving they had ever done. Hope that helps! ----------------------------- www.intercrossings.net An online collection of travel narratives and blog about people, places and travel across cultures. |

Hey Bgag,
Did you ending up going? I'm looking to go diving down there in a few months to make first use of my PADI outside of training. Should I just go to Belize or are there any great cheaper alternatives out there in the area? thanks. |

I'd check out diving around Saba, especially if you're wanting to dive somewhere where it doesn't feel like everyone in the world is going.
I posted this elsewhere, but I think Saba as an island is one of the BEST in the Caribbean, at least for those looking for non-touristy, non-commercialized, non-overdeveloped. Fantastic diving, great hiking, etc. No public buses, no chain hotels, etc. The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page. ---St. Augustine |
